National Woman's Day - Women in Sport

Woman’s sports are greatly underfunded and hardly supported. Women have struggled for years to have their names recognised in sports. I thought it is time to commemorate some of the great woman in the sporting world. Their stories unique and heart wrenching, these women overcame racial, sexual and unfair treatment to become some of the most inspirational woman some of us may never even have heard of.

Alice Coachman was the first black women to win a gold medal at the Olympics; Alice had to overcome both racial and sexual prejudice. Beaten by her father for participating in training, she was forced to practice in secret. Unable to afford shoes and banned from public training halls because of segregation laws, she ran barefoot on dirt roads to perfect her talent. She finally got support and got the chance to not only compete in 1948 but won a gold medal in the high-jump.

Amy Palmeiro-Winters was a runner from a very young age, Amy was lucky to be alive after a motorcycle accident. Although alive the accident had left her left leg crushed. Three years later, after twenty-five surgeries, her left leg was amputated below the knee. She wouldn’t be able to even walk for another three years.

In 2004, she decided to enter into the Silver Strand Marathon. She was equipped with a standard prosthetic leg for walking, and was five months pregnant at the time and yet this magnificent woman finished the marathon taking second in her division. Amy shows us that anything can be accomplished with strength, determination and a love for what you do.

And last but defiantly not least I come to the amazing story Alice marble. As a young girl Alice was an amazing sports player excelling in everything she tired but at the age of 15 she was raped leaving her emotionally scared. Alice managed to over come the pain of her past and used it to push her self to succeed. She won many junior tournaments as a child. Later on in her adult career she was diagnosed with tuberculoses after collapsing on the pitch. Once again tho she wouldn’t let it hold her back after 1934 she too a rest and cam back to win 18 grand slams a recorded that is still impressive today.

These woman were and are still an example of how much  woman have to offer in the sporting world and how there capabilities can be seen as never ending.

Barcelona Wants To Undo The Premier League Trend!

Barcelona are trying to recruit one of England’s under-18 hopefuls.

Loftus-Cheek was called up twice by England at Under-16 level during 2010-11 but had to pull out due to injury on both occasions. Upon his selection in October 2011, he was named captain and played in the Victory Shield opener against Northern Ireland before scoring in the next match at home to Wales, underlining his credentials as one of the best prospects in the squad.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is now one of Chelsea’s wonders; he has been targeted after Barca saw him score for England against Wales last year. Loftus-Cheek was the star player for the Chelsea Academy and Chelsea’s under-18s. Barcelona are aware there is also interest from both Manchester clubs.
The teenager has not yet signed a deal at Chelsea and the European champions hope to undo the trend and snatch a bright young hope themselves (although we all hope they won’t). Barca are fed up with their trainees being luring to the Premier League.

My 30 Day Shred - Day 26

Hello All,
So you are probably wondering where I got to and well basically I have been ill for the last week with a fever so I managed to do the 26 day shred not the 30 day shred!

At the end of it all I felt physically much better but only lost an inch on my arm and hips. I am 2 pounds heavier than when I started.

My body shape pants have just arrived so next week when I am feeling better, I will start the programme again. I will try and increase my water and protein intake.

Unfortunately no weight loss to report but I have seen that someone else did the 30 day shred and it wasn't until they started for their second time that they lost weight. They say it takes 3 months at the gym before you get any results and I figure that it has only just been the equivalent of 3 months at the gym now so hopefully me week's break due to this illness won't set me too far back on my fitness plan.

The only time in my life when I found it easy to lose weight was when I lived in Barcelona in an apartment with no oven and I used to walk for 1 hour a day and eat spinach almost every day. As it is getting warmer, maybe I will try to start walking again for that hour...... we shall see.

Until next week when I have something interesting to say..... let me know how you are getting on.

My 30 Day Shred - Day 19

Hi All,
So I am now technically on day 20 however, I am actually on day 19... Unfortunately on Friday my day went pear shaped and after a meeting was delayed by 2 hours I didn't have enough time from when I left work and got home to do my exercises before meeting my cousin in the City (London). I also could not delay my cousin since she is over from the US and her phone isn't on roaming so I had no way of contacting her to delay her and to be honest I haven't seen her in ages and didn't want to.... subsequently I didn't feel it was best to partake in exercise when we arrived home at 2:30am in the morning on Saturday so I missed a day.

Rather than make it up on Sat by doing 2 sets I was quite pleased with myself for doing one and the same on Sun since it is so cold and snowy. So there you have it, I am continuing and haven't beat myself up about it, I am just a day behind.

On a slightly disappointing note, my calves have definitely toned up, so much so that I am struggling to zip up my boots..... I may need to incorporate some pilates or callinetics into the programme. I still have only lost a pound but strength wise I feel amazing.

I am very close to being convinced to buy the latest craze in fitness wear which promises the world... Hotpants... have you heard of them? Apparently you can lose weight 4 x faster with hotpants: http://zaggora.com/how-it-works Have a look at the homepage as with all their testimonials it is pretty convincing and I'm thinking that this is the answer to speed up my inch loss.... I think I may buy the flares, I'm not sure why they are called flares as they are the opposite but this may help my calf problem.

I will try and measure myself next week, only 11 days left!

If you have any fitness stories or experience with the 'Hotpants' above, please send me a message on Facebook.

My 30 Day Shred - Day 10

Hello All,
It is Day 10 and I am very excited as I get to start the 2nd 10 day routine tomorrow. As I had a false start at this programme and ended up doing 5 days extra, 15 days on the same exercise routine is quite boring!

I was a little disappointed as I wanted to give it my best shot today but my back and knees hurt a bit and I just didn't feel like doing my best however, Weds and Thurs I did follow the hardcore lady at the back and I feel sooo much stronger. I can do 17 proper press ups in the time they give you when I first started it was 4.....

You probably want me to weigh myself and give you a measurement update but I'm thinking I should wait until half way through. To be honest I am very proud of myself for sticking to the programme and excited about completing it and moving onto the rip60 which I will only allow myself to buy once I have completed this for at least 20 days!

On another note, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac good dates for starting a diet are Jan 31st and then not again until Feb 22nd or 27th so it's not too late to restart your new year's resolution! I'm not sure if the lunar cycle is an influence but many people have have followed it for year and it's actually a very interesting site with health and gardening tips: http://www.almanac.com/bestdays/timetable

Until next week, fitness friends.

Round 2 of the 30 day shred

Hi,
So I started again on Weds and it has been going well. Yesterday my knee started to hurt so I couldn't quite lunge properly but I'm trying to keep going! Since feeling better I have been trying to catch up with life so Thurs night I ended up doing the DVD at 9:30 at night. I'm really excited about what is around the corner with this fitness DVD and I am already looking at taking it a step further and maybe starting the p90x or rip60 after. I heard about the rip60 after speaking to a friend in the US. I looked it up and you can buy it here in the UK and Jillian Michaels also is in some of the fitness DVDs that come with it. However, I have a friend doing the p90x programme and in 3 weeks she has lost 1 stone and 13 inches! Let me know your fitness success stories or if you have tried any of the programmes.
